Bubblers and Air Décor: What They Do and Do Not Do
An air stone in an ornament looks lovely. It is also doing less than people assume.
Gas exchange happens at the surface
Bubbles do not oxygenate water meaningfully by themselves — the surface agitation they cause does. A bubbler is one way to get that movement.
Where it genuinely helps
Warm tanks hold less oxygen. In an Indian summer, added surface movement is worthwhile in a heavily stocked tank.
Noise is the trade-off
Air pumps hum. Sitting the pump on a soft mat and above the water line, with a check valve fitted, deals with most of it.
